Harnishfeger Residence

Small additions, combined with strategic modifications, can make an impact that is far greater than the sum of the addition's parts.

The home owner had great respect for her vintage Bungalow. One of just a few original Craftsman homes yet to be redeveloped in this Clarendon neighborhood. A new one-story addition was to replace a sub-standard rear wing lacking adequate space and proper HVAC.

The new addition is slightly greater in area to the original room it replaced. The new work also includes a rear entrance, and expanded kitchen. The original basement stair shared a common wall with the kitchen. It had poor headroom and was entered through a bedroom. To help resolve multiple ills, the stair was relocated to the addition. This change restored privacy to the bedroom and allowed adequate space for the kitchen to expand. The new kitchen now opens onto the family room as part of the social space.
