Beside an earlier kitchen-remodel, this mid-century Westover Colonial was untouched, including original steel casement windows. The requested improvements were a common theme among our clients looking to expand. A 2-story rear addition calling for more bedrooms and expanded living space. But, even though the description of work is frequently similar, the design results are seldom the same (for comparison, view Doyle, Chapman and Holman residences).
The addition's open-plan layout significantly improves ground floor circulation. The former kitchen made room for a new guest powder & hall closet. The addition's form is selectively manipulated for scale and interest. The extended Master & glass Family room bay form a backdrop to the porch. The rear raking eave disguises the wall's full 2 story height. Joining brick & siding gracefully is tricky. The new East brick bay is a segue element intervening between new & old. For a material break, the West addition wall steps back. The above roof cantilevers out to further blur the transition between new and existing.
