This former small brick Cape was expanded both up and forward. Project goals included: An open-plan family room big enough to accommodate an eating area; Enlarged kitchen; Powder; Entry foyer & covered entrance; A deck; And new 2nd floor master & guest suites.
The family room recaptures and expands the former den - guest suite. The conversion provides an expansive light filled entertainment space, including the kitchen, and promotes much improved overall flow to all ground floor spaces. The new entry hall provides a generous closet and relieves the space pinch formed between the former front door and stair landing. At the 2nd floor a former closet was removed to create hall access to the two new bedrooms. Both new front bedrooms are suites, with dedicated bathrooms and walk-in closets.
The exterior composition is a compelling transformation showing no trace of what is new or old. For reasons of economy, the new 2nd floor exterior walls were framed in wood. Any existing brick gables and 2nd floor walls were furred out and covered over with the new siding. A decorative flared skirt detail & cornice was employed to finesse the plane change caused by furring out the upper walls.
